International Recognition Awarded to University of Pécs Lecturer at ACSA Annual Meeting

Dr. Tibor Zoltán Dányi, PhD, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Building Structures and Energy Design, UP FEIT,  was awarded the Best Short Paper Award by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) at the 2026 Annual Meeting.
The ACSA College of Distinguished Professors presented the award in recognition of outstanding peer-reviewed research contributions at the Annual Meeting. The 2026 conference was held in Chicago and featured leading scholars and educators in architecture presenting their latest research.
Dr. Dányi was recognized for his paper, “Housing Insecurity and Solidarity Architecture: An Educational Intervention in Pécs, Hungary.” The study examines an innovative educational approach developed at the University of Pécs, which aligns with the principles of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023. These principles emphasize inclusive design, support for vulnerable communities, and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings.
Central to the research is the “Lakni Kell” (“We All Need a Home”) program, initiated by the Research Group for Solidarity in Architecture. This project addressed regional housing challenges by renovating a vacant 33 m² municipal apartment for a young family at risk of homelessness. The initiative was implemented through extensive collaboration among local government, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, vocational schools, and private-sector partners.
A key component of the project was the involvement of both university and vocational students in the design and construction phases. The intervention adhered to principles of minimal environmental impact, cost-efficiency, and passive energy performance. Additionally, it promoted hands-on, socially engaged learning.
The findings demonstrate the potential of “solidarity architecture,” which integrates social inclusion, sustainable housing solutions, and architectural education. The project provides a replicable model for municipalities and contributes to the advancement of socially responsible architectural practice.
This international recognition underscores the Faculty’s commitment to research excellence, educational innovation, and meaningful societal engagement.
